Ohakune, New Zealand

Located in the Ruapehu District, Ohakune is known as the "après ski" capital of the North Island, being the largest town at the base of Mt Ruapehu and gateway to the southern side of the Tongariro National Park. Ohakune is also known as the Carrot capital of New Zealand and is famous for the carrots grown locally - a giant carrot statue stands at the Eastern entrance to the township. Around 1400 people reside year-round, with numbers boosted by mountain staff during the winter season. In addition to market gardening, local industry includes farming and forestry.
