The Old Coach Road
A cobblestoned road built over 100 yrs ago for train passengers to be transported between the north and south railheads. The gradient here was too steep for trains, so passengers were transferred into horse-drawn coaches to meet the next section of railway.
Visitors with limited time will be able to do the Old Coach Road day ride/walk from either end as we can arrange transport, dropping you off at Horopito for the trip back to Ohakune. On this stage you will ride or walk through an old railway tunnel, into majestic native forest and over the breathtaking Hapuawhenua Viaduct, a historic feat of engineering. Information boards tell you of the history along the way. You will enjoy wide scenes out across farmland to the distant ranges, and arrive back at the Peaks in time for a well deserved soak in the spa.
Bridge to Nowhere/ Mungupurua Valley
An iconic trail which follows the Mungupurua Stream before reaching the Bridge to Nowhere, on the Whanganui River. The surrounding land is steeped in rich Maori and colonial history. The trail is approximately 38 kms one way .You can return by the same route, or take a jetboat to Pipiriki and return by road from there.
Pick up from our gate available: see www.whanganuiriveradventures.co.nz
Ratamaire Road
Bike 10 mins from The Peaks Motor Inn to this metalled farm road through rolling sheep and beef farms, with stunning views back across Ohakune township to Mt Ruapehu and beyond, looping back to The Peaks. Takes approximately 11/2 - 2 hours, depending on your detours. You can extend your ride by taking in The Lakes Reserve ( 1.8 km) and the Rangataua Forest trails.

The Lakes Reserve
Biking 10 mins from The Peaks brings you to this 1.8km loop off Lakes Road. The track is a combination of metal and dirt and is a great quick addition to the Ratamaire Rd ride. This lake is the southern most blowhole (or vent) of The Pacific Rim.

Rangataua Forest Trails
Bike from The Peaks to the numerous trails in and around the forest. Enjoy combinations of single mountain bike trails and metal roads across the lower slopes of Mt Ruapehu.
The Mountain Road
A steady 17 km climb from our gate, on sealed road up to The Turoa Ski Field car parks. The official record is 44 mins 08 sec, set during the "Kune Climb" cycle race in Feb 2011. If you don't feel like the climb, you can take transport to the top and enjoy the downhill rush, and/or cycle out towards Rangataua and try the little known Maungateitei Rd.
